The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a pinkish hue across the snowy landscape. Athena, the sharp-eyed bi-eyed husky pup, bounded through the freshly fallen snow, her sleek grey, black and white coat blending seamlessly with the icy backdrop. Behind her, Obito, the clumsy but lovable Malamute puppy, trailed behind, his oversized paws sinking deep into the powdery snow as he stumbled and rolled with every few steps.
“Obito, keep up!” Athena called over her shoulder, her two-toned eyes, one icy blue and the other a rich chocolate brown, sparkling with excitement.
“I’m trying!” Obito huffed, his fluffy black-and-grey coat dusted with snow from his latest tumble. “These paws weren’t made for speed!”
The two were on their way to meet their cousin Dempsey, the ever-energetic golden labrador, at their favorite spot near the frozen lake. When they arrived, however, something was wrong.
Dempsey was nowhere to be seen,at first. Then, Athena’s keen eyes spotted a splash of gold far out on the lake. Dempsey was standing on the ice, his paws slipping and sliding as he barked frantically. Beneath him, the ice cracked ominously.
“Dempsey!” Athena barked, her ears shooting up in alarm.
“I—I thought the ice was thicker!” Dempsey yelped, his voice shaky with fear.
A loud *CRACK* echoed across the lake, and his eyes widened in terror.
“We have to help him!” Athena declared, her voice firm and resolute.
“B-but it’s slippery!” Obito stammered, glancing nervously at the slick surface. “I can barely walk straight on land!”
Athena gave him a reassuring nudge. “We’ve got this. Trust me.” She paused, her clever mind racing. “We’ll use teamwork.”
Obito gulped but nodded. “What’s the plan?”
Athena surveyed the scene. The ice was thinner near Dempsey, but thicker closer to the shore. “Obito, you’ll distract Dempsey so he stays calm. Bark and wag your tail like it’s the best day ever. I’ll crawl out on my belly, it’ll keep the weight spread out and pull him back.”
“Got it!” Obito said, his tail wagging despite his nerves. He waddled closer to the edge of the lake, barking playfully. “Hey, Dempsey! Did you hear about the squirrel convention? They’re giving away free acorns!”
Dempsey stopped panicking for a moment, his ears perking up. “Squirrels? Where?”
As Dempsey’s focus shifted to Obito’s silly antics, Athena began her crawl across the ice. Every muscle in her small frame was tense, and her breath came out in quick puffs that froze in the air. With each inch she moved closer, the ice creaked beneath her, but she kept her eyes locked on her cousin.
When she was close enough, Athena grabbed the scruff of Dempsey’s neck with her teeth. “Hold still!” she mumbled through his fur. Carefully, she began to inch backward, dragging Dempsey toward safety.
Behind her, Obito cheered, his barks echoing through the trees. “You’re doing it, Athena!”
Just as they reached the thicker ice, the surface behind them gave way with a thunderous crack, plunging into the freezing water. Athena’s heart raced, but she didn’t stop. With one final pull, she and Dempsey reached solid ground.
“You’re safe!” Athena exclaimed, releasing Dempsey and collapsing into the snow beside him. Her paws were trembling, but her eyes were bright with relief.
Dempsey shook himself off, showering them both with icy droplets. “Thanks, guys. I don’t know what I was thinking going out there!” He licked Athena’s face gratefully, then turned to Obito. “And you! That squirrel thing, hilarious! I totally forgot I was scared.”
Obito puffed out his chest proudly. “Anything for family.”
As the three pups trudged back toward their cozy den, the sun finally broke free from the horizon, casting a golden glow over the snowy landscape. Despite the cold, their hearts were warm, knowing they’d faced the icy danger together.
“Next time,” Athena said with a playful nudge to Dempsey, “maybe stick to chasing squirrels on land.”
“And next time,” Obito added with a goofy grin, “can the rescue involve less ice? My paws are still numb!”
The trio laughed, their voices echoing through the winter wonderland as they made their way home, ready for a well-deserved nap.
