It was a bright, sunny morning when Athena and Obito’s humans decided to take them on the ultimate birthday adventure, a beach trip to celebrate Obito’s very first birthday. And while Obito might have been clueless about the whole “birthday” thing (it was just another day of slobbery kisses and endless food opportunities), Athena had something far more important on her mind, surfing.
Athena, a nearly two-year-old husky, had always been an elegant creature, graceful, intelligent, and with a knack for mischief. With her sky-blue eye and rich chocolate one, she carried herself like royalty. But behind that regal exterior was a stubborn, energetic, and sometimes downright chaotic bundle of fur. Most notably, she loved jumping over furniture like it was her personal obstacle course, and she had a strong tendency to “decorate” the garden by digging up flowers. Her humans had come to refer to these “decorative moments” as "Athena’s Landscaping Projects," a euphemism that didn’t quite hide their exasperation.
Now, Obito, her one-year-old malamute brother, was a whole different ballgame. Clumsy, food-obsessed, and overly enthusiastic, he had the most adorable smile and an even more adorable habit of knocking things over by accident. His oversized paws made him look like he was always just a hair away from tripping over his own legs, but his love language was simple, wet, slobbery kisses. He was the walking, wagging embodiment of joy and chaos wrapped up in a fluffy, black-and-tan ball of adorableness.
The morning they arrived at the beach, Athena was already imagining herself riding the waves like a majestic, furry mermaid. Obito, however, was more interested in the ocean's salty smells and the endless supply of seagulls that looked suspiciously like giant, flying snacks.
“Obito, look! We’re going to learn to surf!” Athena declared, prancing around in the sand like she had just been crowned queen of the surf. Her bi-colored eyes gleamed with mischief. Her brother, Mr. Toe Beans, was busy inspecting the sand with deep, philosophical thought, as if he were solving the mysteries of the universe.
Obito’s ears perked up at the word “surf.” His face lit up with that goofy, toothy grin, and he promptly began to wag his tail so hard that he knocked over a beach umbrella. A few seagulls, startled by the sudden gust of wind, took off in a flurry of squawks. Obito, now on his feet, dashed after them with all the grace of a toddler on roller skates. Athena, sensing that her quest for surfing glory was a serious one, gave her brother an exasperated sigh.
“Obito, focus!” she barked, her paws stamping the sand like a queen demanding attention. “We’re going to be professional surfers!”
Obito paused mid-chase, his ears flopping, as he tried to process this. Professional surfers? Wasn’t that just another way of saying “epic snack-hunters who happen to be near water”? He wasn’t sure, but his interest was piqued. He trotted over to Athena, licking her face in a flurry of excited kisses. Athena, already a little annoyed by her brother’s overwhelming affection, sighed dramatically.
“Oh, you’re no help.”
And so, the pair was ready or, more accurately, "pretended to be ready" for their great surfing adventure. First, the humans handed them a surfboard. Athena, being ever the determined leader, leaped on it like a pro. She positioned herself like a true surfer queen, her eyes narrowing as she surveyed the water.
Obito, on the other hand, tried to sit on the surfboard, which was too small for him and his rapidly growing paws. His oversized feet flopped over the edges of the board as he settled down, looking like a giant, fluffy blob on a tiny island. His tail wagged in happiness, and Athena, thinking it would make a great photo op, pretended to be a majestic wave-rider.
However, the universe had other plans. As soon as the first wave rolled in, Athena’s pride took a hit. She paddled furiously with her paws, but as the board tilted, she lost her balance in a spectacular fashion. With a dramatic yelp, she flew off the board, landing in a tangle of sand and paws in the shallow water.
“UGH!” Athena groaned, half laughing and half glaring at the waves. “I had that one! I had it!”
Obito, witnessing Athena’s graceful flop, was immediately inspired. He hopped onto the surfboard with all the elegance of a hippo trying to dance ballet. Athena, now wet and sand-covered, had no time to correct her brother’s disaster in the making. Obito, somehow managing to stay upright for an entire two seconds, wobbled in place before the board flipped over completely. The sight of Obito’s fluffy legs flailing and his giant paw pads slapping the water was something that would haunt the beachgoers’ dreams for years to come.
With a mighty “SPLASH!” Obito found himself floundering in the shallows. Athena, laughing so hard she was nearly choking on seawater, managed to crawl to her feet. Her usually pristine fur was a wet, sandy mess, and she felt like her dignity had been washed out to sea. But that didn’t stop her.
“No, no, no, we are going to do this!” Athena barked, trying to regain some semblance of composure. She eyed the surfboard like a warrior eyeing her battle axe.
Just as she was about to try again, Obito, ever the enthusiastic disaster, pounced on the board for another attempt. He landed with a wet thud, splashing Athena in the process, and then began to furiously lick the board as though it were the greatest treat he had ever encountered. Athena, not one to be outdone, jumped back on, her body trembling with excitement (and maybe a bit of cold water shock).
“You’re going to regret this,” she muttered, her tail wagging determinedly. But then, just as they both tried to balance on the board once more, a gigantic wave rolled in like a tsunami, and before they could even react, they were both sent flying into the water once again, Athena’s bi-colored eyes wide with shock and Obito’s goofy smile still plastered on his face as he paddled happily in the surf.
The humans watched in stunned silence before bursting into laughter at the sight of their two hapless furballs being pummeled by the waves, their surfing dreams shattered but their spirits unbroken.
By the end of the day, the two exhausted pups had learned an important lesson. They weren’t ready to become surfing legends, and maybe, just maybe, they should stick to chasing seagulls and digging holes in the sand. But one thing was clear, no matter how much water, sand, or chaos was thrown their way, Athena and Obito were always the life of the party and they loved each other more than anything.
Athena, looking at Obito as he flopped down on the beach towel, his giant paws still damp with ocean water, sighed happily.
“Maybe next year, we’ll just stick to digging holes,” she mused, snuggling up next to him under a blanket.
Obito, his tongue hanging out and his eyes sparkling with innocent joy, gave her a big sloppy kiss.
“Good idea, Athena. But... where’s my snack?”
And with that, they both settled in for a well-earned nap on the sand, their surfboard dreams floating away like the tide.
