Briar Rose

Just over two weeks ago, Vanessa from Hooked On Sunshine, released a new pattern, Briar Rose. I instantly knew I had to make it and for once I knew the colour palette I wanted to use.
I’ve struggled with colour combos lately so I just had to go with my gut feeling, even though I wasn’t 100% sure it would work.
I gathered up my yarn and made a start with a half thoughtout plan in place, which you can read all about here.
I decided to use Stylecraft Special Double Knit and Stylecraft Batik, which I purchased from Wool Warehouse, in the colours, White, Parchment and Cream, also Batik Cream.

Round 7 – Parchment
Round 8 – White

Round 10 – Parchment
Round 11 – Cream
Round 12 – Cream
Round 13 – White
Round 14 – Parchment
Round 15- Parchment

The Briar Rose, pattern was a dream, very well explained, beautifully presented and extremely easy to follow, as are all Vanessa’s patterns.
What made it even more pleasurable, when you have made the repeat once, you really don’t need to follow the pattern unless you just want a quick reminder the next time you pick up your project. It’s a great tv watching pattern.

My biggest concern was how many repeats to do.
I decided on starting the border rounds, on the 4th repeat but my two boys thought it should be a little bigger. I continued on and started the border on my 5th repeat.
If I’m honest, I was a little unsure about crocheting the border. I normally like straight edges and Briar Rose is far from that.
I went against my gut feeling and followed the pattern to a tee and I’m rather pleased I did. Even though it’s totally different from what I normally do, I really like it.
My Briar Rose ended up being roughly, 38” x 38”, using a 4mm clover hook.

If you haven’t made any of Vanessa’s patterns, please go and check them out, they are all stunning and her pattern writing is top of the glass. You can even buy all the yarn for her beautiful colour palettes in her online shop.
