If you had been with me, dear Dad,
On the day I wore that dress of ivory,
You’d have smiled, so full of pride,
And walked with me in the afternoon light.
Your hand in mine, our hearts in sync,
With every step, you’d lead the way,
You’d whisper, “This is your moment, love,”
And I’d feel safe, come what may.
But it wasn’t just that day I dreamed,
For life had more to show, to give,
The day my sons first filled the world,
And I began to truly live.
If you had seen their tiny hands,
Held them close, and kissed their hair,
I know you’d be the grandest grandad,
With love beyond what words could share.
You’d teach them things, the way you did me,
How to be kind, how to be strong,
How to chase their dreams,
And know where they belong.
If you had been with me through it all,
To share these moments, bright and true,
I’d watch your eyes fill up with love,
And I’d know they’d see you, as I do.
But though you couldn’t hold them near,
Your spirit lingers, soft and clear,
In every laugh, in every smile,
In every moment that feels worthwhile.
So here’s to you, my dearest Dad,
In every memory, far and wide,
You may not stand here by my side,
But in my heart, you still abide.
beautiful sweet heart
